គំរូ Personal Statement
I strongly believe this study program ideally fits my enthusiasm for understanding of the United States, in the areas of environment and governance, and leadership. First, I am interested in studying about the United of States because I am really curious to know how the U.S. strengthens its governing systems, how effectively it decentralizes power from the federal government to each individual state, and how its local authorities work. In addition, I am enthusiastic to learn how the Unite States has been doing so far to balance between the development and environmental protection. Second, I am genuinely interested in learning about leadership. I sincerely believe that youth leadership is relatively important for Cambodia’s development because the majority of Cambodian population is young people regarded as an agent of change.
Regarding academic objective, since environmental issues are both global and national threats and since Cambodia is still developing itself without thinking considerably of the impact of environmental destruction, I confidently believe the study of the environmental protection is yet essential to be knowledgeable about. Deforestation, soil erosion, and the like are all the root causes of the 2011 flood occurring in Cambodia, which has destroyed houses, agricultural land area and so on creating millions of homeless people and fearful atmosphere for them such as the fear of electric shock and of their small children to be drown. Consequently, this has resulted in the loss of social and economic benefits. Therefore, it the right time for youth to find out effective ways to response to those destructive forces of Cambodia’s environment catastrophe. As far as I have observed, the United States has substantial experiences in the area of development and environmental protection. In this respect, through the SUSI program, I am confident that the study of environmental policy which plays a crucial role in the economic and political development of the United States will certainly be acquired by means of the experiential learning techniques the institute will provide, and thus I will be able to draw a comparison between how the United States and Cambodia formulate and implement their environmental policy to fit their current situations.
In addition to study objective, I am so curious and want to learn about how effectively the U.S. has been doing to achieve a real democratic regime. As I have observed Cambodia’s governance is not good enough in terms of transparency and accountability. Some Cambodian citizens, if not all, never negligent of what their government is doing and how they could get involved in decision-making as a responsible citizen like in a democratic country does. Hence, I confidently believe it is the time for me to learn about the United States and its individual leaders, who work with their citizens.
The United States of America, the place where every feasible solution and the best knowledge come from, must be a country where I could learn from so that I could put what I have learnt into action.
